Rogue Aquarists is the fishkeeping movement on Holy Rogue Network — for the man, woman, kid, classroom, or apartment that has ever stood in front of a glass box of water and wanted to keep something alive in it. Freshwater community tanks, African and South American cichlids, oscars and predator setups, planted aquascapes (Iwagumi, Dutch, Walstad), nano tanks, marine reefs, koi ponds, breeding rooms, school-classroom tanks — every scale, every saltiness, every species. If you've kept a betta in a 5-gallon, run a 20-tank fishroom in your basement, dosed coral with two-part, scratched your head over a stubborn algae bloom, or stayed up watching fry hatch — this is your hub. The movement carries a specific pitch that nobody else in the fishkeeping internet leads with: **stop doing water changes**. The #1 reason people quit aquariums (or kill their fish) is the weekly water-change schedule — skip it, the nitrates climb, the fish get sick or fight or die. Founder Kimball ran ENTIRE ROOMS of fish tanks in his Utah basement — cichlids, oscars, guppies, planted tanks, plus a koi pond with deep-water-culture lettuce rafts floating on top — and never did a water change again, because the plants drink the water and remove the nitrates the filter can't touch. He turned that pattern into a designed product: the **55-Gallon Standard Tank Topper Filter/Grow Bed** (and a dramatically improved next-generation Topper launching as a flagship Storefront product on the network). In the original Kickstarter demo, Kimball deliberately let a 55-gallon tank go six months with no water change, then dropped the Topper on; inside 8 hours the water went from gross to crystal-clear, and over the next 40 days the tank produced 14 full heads of lettuce. The Topper IS the filter, IS the air pump, IS the light, and IS the grow bed — one elegant unit that turns "I have to clean my tank again" into "the tank cleans itself and feeds me dinner." Rogue Aquarists is the paired sister of **Rogue Growers** at roguegrowers.com. Aquarists who add even a tiny grow bed on top become Growers. Growers who scale their fish side become Aquarists. The two movements feed each other in both directions, and a creator is welcome to wear both hats. Anyone who outgrows hobby-scale and wants to scale to commercial-grade greenhouse aquaponics graduates UP to Murray Hallam at Practical Aquaponics in Brisbane (a friend of the network — Kimball, Brooke, and the kids met Murray and toured his farm in person in February 2019 during the family's worldschooling trip Down Under). Within fishkeeping, certain niches form intensely passionate sub-cultures — and Rogue Aquarists is built to host all of them, with a special soft spot for the Fancy Guppy genetics and show community. Founder Kimball is friends with David Curneal of the Utah Fancy Guppy Associates (743+ members) — a beautifully cult-like network of breeders who treat color strains, tail types, and inheritance patterns as serious applied genetics, run real-world Guppy Shows, and exchange foundational stock between bloodlines. The same show-and-exchange culture lives in cichlid auctions, betta competitions, koi shows, planted-aquascape contests, killifish breeders' associations, and predator-fish keepers' meetups — all of it welcomed here. The genetics, breeding, and show side of fishkeeping is a natural STEM bridge into Rogue Schoolers and a perfect on-ramp for kids and homeschool families looking for an applied-science curriculum that produces living, beautiful, show-able-or-eat-able results. The school-classroom dream is shared with Rogue Growers and lives equally here. The kids called Kimball "Aqua Man" in the hallways at his children's elementary school because he was the cool dad who brought in the exotic-fish tanks. Then teachers asked to come see the basement setup, which led to a year of meetings with multiple Utah school districts to put micro-aquaponics systems in classrooms. The plan: launch the first "Aqua Regis #POOPOWER Laboratory" at Mountain Green Middle School, where High School shop and welding students would BUILD the tanks alongside Kimball, younger kids would feed the fish and harvest, and the cafeteria would walk down the hall to "shop" the kids' produce like a farmers' market — culminating each year in a "Salad Party." Every fish for those classroom systems was donated by **LiveFishDirect (Draper, Salt Lake City)** — Kimball's longtime supplier — and that relationship reignites with the network spin-up: LiveFishDirect remains the supply-side backfill anchor for the network, the same way Grok and Gemini backfill our Distributed Compute when local nodes can't keep up. Local Rogue Aquarist breeders fulfill demand first; LiveFishDirect catches the overflow when school chapters, Tank Topper installs, or marketplace orders run hot. Then 2020 happened and the dream died on the launch pad. Holy Rogue Network is how we bring it back, this time at scale: Certified Rogue Aquarists across the country can offer aquaponics-classroom services into BOTH homeschool co-ops AND public-school greenhouse / lab / shop programs that need new life. The kids who help feed, build, and harvest in those classrooms graduate as **Certified Aqua Kids** — the network's youth tier shared with Rogue Growers. The classroom side gathers the creators teaching the craft — beginner setup tutorials, cycling and water chemistry, species-specific care (cichlid aggression, planted-tank CO2, reef chemistry, koi pond depth), aquascaping (Iwagumi, Dutch, jungle, Walstad method), filtration (canister, sump, HOB, sponge, wet/dry, refugium), fish breeding and Fancy Guppy genetics, live-food cultivation (brine shrimp, daphnia, blackworms), disease ID and quarantine protocols, DIY tank stands and sumps, and Tank Topper installs. The marketplace runs on the standard Holy Rogue Network template: Storefronts (Tank Topper units shipped flat-pack, custom-built tanks, locally-bred fish, show-quality Fancy Guppies, breeder fry from Utah Fancy Guppy Associates members, koi from local breeders, aquascaping hardscape and live plants, breeding gear, RO/DI water service, with LiveFishDirect (Draper) as the named supply-side backfill when local Aquarist breeders are tapped out), Classifieds (rehoming fish, free or cheap used 55s and 75s when an Aquarist downsizes, swap meets), Hot-Oven-equivalent "Tank Tour" days where local Aquarists open their fishrooms to visitors, and Clubs (local aquarium clubs hosted by Local Fish Stores, Fancy Guppy Associations and other breed-specific guilds (cichlid keepers, betta, koi, killifish, aquascape), breed shows and auctions, breeding co-ops, school-aquaponics chapters). Climb the Halo Rating ladder by being the breeder whose fry always survive, the aquascaper whose tanks win competitions, the classroom Faculty member who gets aquaponics into another school this year. Earn your **Certified Rogue Aquarist** badge to start; eventually graduate to certified **Aqua Angel** — the marketplace tier who mentors a brand-new fishkeeper from "I just bought my first 10-gallon" through their first stable, planted, well-cycled, never-needs-a-water-change tank — and host signature Tank Tours and Build Days of your own.
